Geiger Counter
Note: This machine has parts of it (like the geiger tube) that operate at over 600V. Do not crack the casing and attempt to fix problems yourself.

Note: This machine operates around radioactive materials. Please wear personal protection equipment as warranted.

Installation

1. The geiger counter is a hand-held device. It should already come prepared and virtually ready to go. Inspect for damage and then connect the probe cable to the probe connector.
2. Health Physics (in the Environmental Health and Safety office on Oak Road) can calibrate the geiger counters. Have them do so.

Operations

1. Turn the switch to the battery check position. The meter's needle should land in the battery OK area.

2. Place a check source in a repeatable position adjacent to the detector and move the switch so that you get an upscale reading. Note down the distance (radiation decreases as the square of the distance) and reading for future reference.

3. Push the Reset button and watch the reading plunge to zero, and then climb back to the source reading when Reset is released. The response (sensitivity vs. speed of reading) can be adjusted.

Maintenance

1. Send the geiger counter to Health Physics for repairs and recalibration.
