Note: This standard operating procedure is not meant to replace safety information found in the manufacturer's manual. Consult it before attempting any centrifuge procedure.
Note: Always keep the compartment load under the maximum load for the speed (rpm) specified. Failure to do so could lead to rotor failure or machine damage. There is a worst-case hazard of the rotor sharpneling and possibly destroying the machine and everything around it.
Note: Always make sure that test tubes placed in the centrifuge have no cracks. A cracked test tube will shatter in a centrifuge.
Note: Make sure the centrifuge and all of its contents are symmetrically balanced. Failure to do so will severely damage the motor.
Pre-run checks and pre-loading
1. Check the entire centrifuge, especially the rotor and the drive spindle, for scratches and burrs. Check the rotor log. If the rotor is ending the recommended useful lifetime, consult supervisor before using.
2. Wipe the surfaces clean before each use. Do not use strong lab detergents. See manual or your supervisor for details.
3. Load the test tubes or other containers in so that the weight is balanced in the plane of the centrifuge. Check specific manual for more details about balancing, maximum weight, and maximum volume.
4. Install the rotor into the centrifuge (see manual for specifics).
5. For some models, you can set the thermostat to the desired temperature. This may require a test run for to determine the error in the thermostat. See individual manuals for details.
6. In some cases, you may have to cool down the centrifugal chamber so that the temperature rise is minimized.
Running
1. Place the test tubes in the assembled centrifuge. Make sure the test tubes are not cracked. Make sure the chemicals placed in the test tubes are compatible with the centrifuge tube material.
2. Replace the top of the centrifuge. When running an auto lock mechanism keep the lid in place. If the top is not locked down properly, the centrifuge will not run due to the extreme danger of his revolutions.
3. Set the speed (RPM), timer, and in some models the temperature.
4. Let the centrifuge run until the timer reaches zero. The centrifuge will stop on its own.
Note: In case of power loss, the electrical lock on many models will prevent the opening of the lid. See individual manuals for details on removing the lid.
Maintenance
1. Clean the centrifuge with a damp cloth. DO NOT USE STRONG DETERGENTS, ACIDS, OR BASES.
2. See the individual manual for details. Possible problems include dull carbon brushes, vibrations, and unlocked lids. Clean the rotor after each use.
