Handling, use and storage of chloroform for
molecular biology. |

Chemicals |
May be fatal if
inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through skin. Irritating to eyes, mucous membranes, and upper
respiratory tract. Causes skin irritation. May be carcinogenic. Exposure to fire or high temperatures
may lead to formation of phosgene, a highly toxic gas. |

Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) |
Always where
gloves. Nitrile gloves have a 4
minute breakthrough time. Use lab coat and eye protection also. |

Environmental / Ventilation Controls |
Handle chloroform in
hoods located in either 351 of 352. |

Store tightly
closed in cool dark place (dark
glass). Incompatible with STRONG

Spill and Accident
Procedures |
For large spill, call
for someone with SCUBA apparatus (685-2848). Absorb liquid with spillX-S or
diatomaceous earth and contain in plastic pail or glass bottle. Exposure: Nausea, dizziness, and headache. In the event of skin
contact, immediately wash with soap and water. In case of eye contact,
promptly wash with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes and obtain medical
attention. |

Waste Disposal |
Place in appropriate
container, labeled with Haz water label and contact EH&S (685-2848) for
collection. |
